A three-day special session of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly is set to commence on Saturday, featuring the swearing-in of newly-elected MLAs and the election of a new Speaker. The Speaker's election is anticipated to occur soon as the Assembly prepares for the winter session in Nagpur from December 16 to 21. This session will serve as a platform to outline the legislative agenda for the newly-formed Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. Senior BJP MLA Kalidas Sulochana Kolambkar was sworn in as the Pro-tem Speaker of the Assembly by Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan on Friday, a day before the special session.

Shiv Sena MLA Ashok Dharmaraj Patil expressed his happiness over being re-elected by the people of Bhandup West Assembly constituency, stating his commitment to continue working for its development. Similarly, BJP MLA Manisha Chaudhary thanked the public for electing her for the third time and vowed to keep working for her constituency's development. Earlier, newly-elected Shiv Sena MLA Amol Dhondiba Khatal paid his respects at the Vidhan Bhavan on the first day of the special session of the Maharashtra Assembly. Khatal expressed his gratitude to the people of Sangamner Assembly constituency and emphasized his dedication to addressing issues like water and unemployment. The Maharashtra Legislative Assembly is the lower house of the state's bicameral legislature in western India.

Mahayuti alliance wins 235 seats

The assembly comprises 288 members elected from single-seat constituencies. On Thursday, Devendra Fadnavis was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra at Azad Maidan in Mumbai. The ceremony also saw the swearing-in of two deputy chief ministers, NCP leader Ajit Pawar and Shiv Sena chief Eknath Shinde, in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly Elections, the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance achieved a sweeping victory with 235 seats. This marked a significant milestone for the BJP, which became the largest party with 132 seats. The Shiv Sena and the Nationalist Congress Party also made notable gains with 57 and 41 seats respectively. Meanwhile, the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) faced a major setback, with the Congress securing only 16 seats. Its alliance partner Shiv Sena (UBT) won 20 seats, and the NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) managed just 10 seats.
