The first phase of polling for Jharkhand's assembly elections, the Wayanad parliamentary seat in Kerala, and by-elections for 33 assembly seats across 11 states began today.

In Jharkhand, the BJP-led NDA aims to displace the JMM-led coalition, with prominent candidates such as former Chief Minister Champai Soren and Congress leader Ajoy Kumar contesting the elections.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, the Congress General Secretary, is making her electoral debut from Wayanad, a constituency that was previously represented by her brother, Rahul Gandhi. After securing victories in both seats during the Lok Sabha elections earlier this year, Rahul chose to hold on to the family bastion of Raebareli. As the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, he has also campaigned for Priyanka in Wayanad.

In the by-polls, Priyanka Gandhi is facing off against Satyan Mokeri, the candidate from the Left Democratic Front (LDF), and Navya Haridas from the BJP. Voting for the Chelakkara Assembly seat in Thrissur district will take place on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Jharkhand will conduct elections in two phases, on November 13 and 20, with the first phase covering 43 seats.

Prominent candidates in the first phase include former Chief Minister and BJP's Champai Soren, who is contesting from Seraikella. In Jamshedpur East, Congress leader Ajoy Kumar faces off against Purnima Das Sahu, daughter-in-law of former Jharkhand Chief Minister and current Odisha Governor Raghubar Das. Meanwhile, in Jamshedpur West, Congress leader Banna Gupta is up against JD(U) leader Saryu Roy, who previously defeated Raghubar Das in the last election.

In the first phase of Jharkhand's assembly elections, BJP's Geeta Koda, wife of former Chief Minister Madhu Koda, is facing off against Congress leader Sona Ram Sinku in Jaganathpur. Meanwhile, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) has nominated sitting Rajya Sabha MP Mahua Maji from Ranchi. Voting for the remaining 38 constituencies will take place on November 20, with the results set to be announced on November 23. In the previous assembly elections, the JMM secured 30 seats, the BJP won 25, and Congress claimed 16 seats. To ensure a smooth electoral process, over 200 companies of security forces have been stationed at key locations. A total of 683 candidates, including 73 women, are competing in the first phase.

The bypolls, which include 33 seats, are spread across various states, with seven in Rajasthan, six in West Bengal, and five in Assam. In West Bengal, the six assembly seats up for election are Naihati, Haroa, Medinipur, Taldangra, Sitai, and Madarihat. Meanwhile, Assam will hold polling for the Samaguri, Behali, Bongaigaon, Sidli, and Dholai seats. Voting for assembly elections in Maharashtra is scheduled for November 20, alongside the remaining bypoll seats.
