The left-handed batter’s availability is under the radar, and with that, it might affect his T20 World Cup plans too. Over the past years, Tilak has been in the Indian team squad and has been a key part of India’s middle-order batting lineup.
In the Asia Cup 2025, Tilak played a crucial role in helping India win the title, which included a match-winning fifty in the final against Pakistan.
According to the latest reports, Tilak went through abdominal discomfort in Rajkot, where he represented Hyderabad in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26. Further, it was suggested that the middle-order batter was suggested by the Centre of Excellence (CoE) doctors in Bengaluru.
The medical team advised the batter to undergo surgery; the expected period of recovery is three to four weeks, which makes him unavailable for the T20I series against New Zealand. The three to four weeks of recovery also includes the T20 World Cup 2026, as the campaign will start on February 7 against the USA.

Tilak Varma Replacement In T20 World Cup 2026?

As there are chances that Tilak Varma might get ruled out of the New Zealand series and T20 World Cup 2026, there are chances that Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer could make their comeback in the team, while Riyan Parag can also get the chance.
Now it has to be seen whether Tilak Varma will get back to his proper health or not, and if not, then who’ll be replacing him in the squad.
