Steve Smith Comeback: Steve Smith is one of the greatest test batter of all time, but now he has proven with time that he can turn out to be a great asset for the national team in white-ball cricket if given the chance. As of now he is nowhere in the team’s T20I squad and won’t be travelling for the World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, but his performances in the Big Bash League have gained him some attention.

After winning the Ashes, Smith played just six games and smashed 299 runs at a strike rate of 167, which includes a century, which really helped his team, the Sydney Sixers, to reach the final. Although they lost the final to the Perth Scorchers, Smith’s form was on another level.
“Smith is ready to go”: Ricky Ponting
Due to Smith’s explosive season, suddenly now he is in the discussion for a call-up if any injury takes place for Australia during the World Cup. Former Australian cricketer Ricky Ponting also backed the player for the upcoming World Cup.
Ricky Ponting said,

“His numbers stack up better than anybody else’s. But when you’ve been out and the side’s had some success, and Travis Head and Mitch Marsh are the incumbents, it’s hard to push one of those two guys out of an opening slot.”
“And poor Steve has probably been pigeonholed as an opening batsman only in the T20 game, which probably has held him back a little bit in the last few years as far as selection is concerned. But he’s only one little injury away. He’s the next cab off the rank, and he’s ready to go.”

Since February 2024, Smith hasn’t represented the team in the T20I format. With Marsh and Head being the openers and Tim David’s promotion up in the team, it looks like this time Australia is looking for dominance.
So if there’s any injury in the team, then there are chances that Smith might get a call-up from the team.
