Shubman Gill: The Indian team sensation Shubman Gill has been officially appointed as India’s new One-Day International (ODI) captain, replacing Rohit Sharma. The Men In Blue will start their campaign against Australia in a three-match ODI series starting from October 19. India’s campaign against Australia will start on October 19 (Perth), October 23 (Adelaide), and October 25 (Sydney).
The tension among fans has come to rest after the BCCI announced the squad for the Australia series and whether Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will be part of the squad.
BCCI Announces Shubman Gill As New Captain

With this the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the ODI and T20I squads for the Australia tour. The Indian ODI team will be going through a transition phase in ODI too, as the same was done in test cricket a few months back. Shubman Gill has been appointed the new captain in the ODI format, while Shreyas Iyer will be the vice-captain. Suryakumar Yadav will be responsible for the T20Is, with Gill remaining as the vice-captain of the team.

Shubman Gill Appointed ODI Captain

Team India’s chief selector, Ajit Agarkar, announced the squad at a press conference. He stated that Shubman Gill will now lead the ODI team, as was done in test cricket. With this change, it has also been confirmed that Rohit Sharma will now be part of the team as a player. Rohit has been selected as a batsman for the Indian team for the first time since December 2021.
The biggest joy for fans on this tour was the return of both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to the ODI team. Both veterans last played for India in the 2025 Champions Trophy, where India won the trophy after the 2013 Champions Trophy under MS Dhoni’s captaincy. After nearly seven months, both players will be seen in blue once again.
The selection committee has rested Jasprit Bumrah from the ODI series, as he is currently busy with the West Indies series. Wicketkeeper batter Rishabh Pant is out due to an injury sustained during the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. All-rounder Hardik Pandya will also be out of the tour due to injury. This series is also special because it will be India’s first ODI series since winning the Champions Trophy 2025. It will also be the first time Team India will play an ODI series on Australian soil since December 2020.
