Shubman Gill All Format Captain: After Shubman Gill was dropped from the T20 World Cup 2026 squad, a sudden halt came in between his ambitions of becoming India’s next all-format captain. Now, England’s former cricketer Monty Panesar had shared his tough views on Shubman Gill. Panesar stated that Gill’s approach to the game, leading India in all three formats, is not enough yet.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) showed its trust in Gill after Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli announced their retirement from the format. In the test series against England, Gill showed record-breaking batting performance, where he also led the team to a 2-2 series draw. After this success of his, the board gave him the vice captaincy of the T20I format ahead of the Asia Cup 2025 in September. After the vice captaincy, he was also promoted as India’s ODI captain.

These moves by BCCI speculated that the management is grooming Gill as India’s next all-format captain, with the potential to lead India after the T20 World Cup 2026 in March.

However, the board dropped Gill after his poor form in the T20Is, where he scored just 291 runs in 15 innings without smashing a single half century.

In a recent interview, Panesar praised Gill’s natural talent but criticized his shot selection, stating that he often plays lazy shots. He also stated that Kohli’s intensity and aggression were the main keys of his captaincy across formats, qualities according to Panesar.

Panesar said,

“He is a complacent cricketer. He has a lot of talent, but he starts playing lazy shots in the game. Virat Kohli’s intensity and aggression are evident in all formats. Shubman Gill can’t do that. Too much burden for him. He can’t be the captain of all formats. It is too much for him.”

Further, Panesar stated that India are unlikely to miss Kohli in white-ball cricket but stated that his absence is visible in the test cricket.

He said,

“In the white-ball format, you won’t miss Virat Kohli that much. But yes, in Test cricket, it’s evident that Virat Kohli is not there, and the team’s intensity is lower.”

After getting dropped from India’s T20 World Cup 2026 squad, Gill has now shifted his focus to the ODI format, as a home series against New Zealand is around the corner. Ahead of this series, he is all set to feature in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025 for Punjab.
