Shadab Khan New Captain: The T20 World Cup 2026 title winner Shahid Afridi feels that Shadab Khan will definitely be the next captain of Pakistan if Mike Hesson stays as the head coach of the team. As of now, Pakistan are still in the race to qualify for the semifinals under the captaincy of Salman Ali Agha. Many cricket experts have already predicted that it’s just a few games left and Agha will lose the spot of captaincy in the team due to the low performance of the team under him.

The Men in Green were given a lifeline in the T20 World Cup after England defeated New Zealand by four wickets in Colombo. Now the thing that Pakistan has to do is just beat Sri Lanka by 65 runs, or if they go for the chase, then they have to get the target in 13 overs to get into the semifinal and improve their net run rate.
However, ahead of the crucial game against Sri Lanka, Afridi believes that Shadab is more likely to become the next captain if Hesson’s tenure as the head coach remains. It is to be noted that when Pakistan lost to India by 61 runs, Afridi asked the management to drop Shadab due to poor performance.
He said,
“If Mike Hesson stays on as the coach, then I think Shadab Khan will be made the captain. They have a connection and go back a long way, stemming from their stint with Islamabad United in the Pakistan Super League. Shadab is not a bad choice, but if his performance as a bowler was better, then it would have been great.”
Further, he added,
“We need Shadab to come up with consistent performances. If that comes, we will also feel good about calling him the captain. I always used to say he was the backbone of the team. I think Shadab will be made the captain, as they don’t have any other choice. Make him the captain, but he should be a performer.”

Before that, Shadab Khan attacked former Pakistan cricketers, including Afridi asking for his exclusion from the team. After an incredible performance against Namibia, Shadab hit back, stating that his team had defeated India in the World Cup, but the former players failed to do so. This comment made by him sparked many controversies.
Afridi is not the only one to call Shadab the next captain. Earlier, Shoaib Malik had also said the same, stating that the plans have already started to make him the next captain.
