In the last few days, many questions were raised about Virat Kohli retiring from Test cricket and donning the Indian ODI jersey.

Last year Virat and Rohit retired from Test cricket, while they retired from T20I cricket after winning the T20 World Cup 2024. The duo made their comeback to international cricket in October 2025, which was a trip to Australia.

Panchal feels that ODI cricket was in its final stage, but the format just got revived after Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma chose to play only ODI cricket.

“Virat and Rohit retiring from the other two formats was the best thing that could’ve happened to ODI cricket. The 50-over game, which seemed to be in its final trenches, has suddenly been revived because two of India’s biggest legends play exclusively that format.”

Over the last few months, many questions were raised on the future of ODI cricket, and even former Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin stated that sometimes fans get bored watching the 50-over format, especially in the middle overs.

In the last two months of 2025, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli looked in extremely tremendous form. Rohit won the Player of the Series against Australia, and the same was done by Virat Kohli against South Africa.

Both players also represented their domestic teams in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26, where Rohit scored 155 runs and Kohli smashed 131 and 77 runs.

The duo will now be seen in action against three ODI series against New Zealand commencing on January 11, Sunday.
