Pathan also recalled the time when Virat Kohli was being compared to Sachin Tendulkar, and now the same is going on with Shubman, as he is being compared to Virat Kohli.
Irfan Pathan said,
“When I entered the Indian team at the age of 19, the great Rahul Dravid told me that you have come to the team; it is good, but things would get tougher from here.”
Further, Pathan accepted that Gill too needs a similar kind of adjustment, as now he has been appointed as the captain in different formats of the game.
Pathan said,

“The same can be said for Gill. He became captain in that England series, and he increased his average and authority within the team. Then he got the ODI captaincy. When that happens, you get an opportunity to grow a lot.”
“He has a lot of talent. There will always be comparisons. Virat was compared with Sachin, and now Gill is being compared to Virat, who has scored those 25000-30000 runs.”
“Shubman Gill Is A Quality Player”: Irfan Pathan
As of now things have not been in Gill’s favor in recent times. He has been dropped from India’s upcoming T20 World Cup 2026 squad after being appointed as vice captain of the team.
He said,

“We know what a quality player he is, but he is perhaps short of a little bit of runs at the moment.”
“It’s unfortunate to have missed out on the last World Cup as well because we went with different combinations. But it’s the combinations more than anything else. Someone has to miss out when you pick 15, and unfortunately, it’s Gill at this point.”
