India Won T20 WC 2026: When India lost to South Africa in the Super 8 against South Africa, everyone got the memories of November 19. It was believed that the Narendra Modi Stadium might turn out to be a cursed one for India one more time. The visiting team skipper Mitchell Santner won the toss and asked India to bat first on March 8, Sunday.

In front of over 100,000 fans at the Narendra Modi Stadium, India’s hitters launched a vicious assault as the hosts made history by becoming the first side to win the T20 World Cup on home territory, the first to successfully defend the title, and the first to win a third world T20 championship.

India’s top order put on a relentless show of power-hitting against a wary and unpredictable New Zealand bowling outfit. India amassed a formidable 255 for 5, the biggest score ever recorded in a T20 World Cup final, with three of the best hitters scoring half-centuries. With an over remaining, the bowlers bundled the visitors for 159 runs, finishing the job with authority and never letting New Zealand rest. The largest winning margin in a T20 World Cup final is the 96-run demolition job.

Abhishek Sharma, who faced a lot of criticism before the finals as he smashed just 89 runs in the run-up to the final, was asked to bat first. He waited an over against off-spinner Glenn Phillips before launching a fierce counterattack that silenced his detractors. He was joined by Sanju Samson as they launched themselves into the New Zealand assault.

India made a score of 92 runs without losing any wickets in the powerplay; credit goes to Abhishek’s 17-ball fifty, which was the fastest by any batter in a T20 World Cup final. With Abhishek caught behind, Rachin Ravindra’s left-arm spin eventually broke the 98-run opening partnership of India.

Samson was joined by Ishan Kishan, who kept the scoreboard moving and bigger. Samson reached his third consecutive half-century before changing course and hitting Ravindra for three straight sixes, while Kishan hit a quick fifty-four. But at the end, Samson once again failed to smash a century.

Jimmy Neesham claimed three wickets in a thrilling over that momentarily gave New Zealand hope. To temporarily halt India’s surge, he dismissed Samson, Kishan, and skipper Suryakumar Yadav—the final two off consecutive deliveries.

Even after withstanding blows from Mitchell Santner (43) and Tim Seifert (52), New Zealand never fully recovered from the early collapse. As India secured a decisive victory, Axar Patel (3/27) and Jasprit Bumrah (4/15) spearheaded the attack with the ball, destroying the Kiwi batting lineup. In the end, New Zealand was dismissed for 159 in 19 overs.
