Gautam Gambhir On Suryakumar Yadav: Team India’s star batter and T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav may not have been in his prime in the Asia Cup 2025, but head coach Gautam Gambhir has spoken out in his defense. Gambhir believes Surya’s poor form isn’t a cause for concern, as he’s playing high-risk cricket for the team, and failures in such tactics are part of the game.
Gautam Gambhir On Suryakumar Yadav

In fact, Suryakumar Yadav has scored just 100 runs in 12 T20I matches so far this year. In the Asia Cup 2025, he managed to score only 72 runs in six matches, with his highest score being 47* against Pakistan. Despite this, Gautam Gambhir says Surya’s approach and commitment to the team set him apart.
Gambhir said,
“Honestly, Surya’s batting form doesn’t concern me because we have committed to an ultra-aggressive template in our dressing room. When you embrace this philosophy, failures are inevitable. It would be easy for Surya to score 40 runs off 30 balls and avoid criticism, but we have collectively decided that it’s acceptable to fail while pursuing this approach.”
Gambhir Praised The Young Players

Gautam Gambhir continued,
“Abhishek Sharma is in excellent form right now, and when Surya returns to his rhythm, he will take charge again. In T20 cricket, it’s not just runs that matter, but impact. Our aggressive approach may sometimes fail our batsmen, but that’s what sets us apart from other teams.”

Gambhir praised Suryakumar, calling him a “great human being” and saying that Surya’s leadership and team motivation in the shorter formats are commendable.
At present all eyes will now be on the five-match T20I series against Australia, starting from October 29, where Surya will have a golden opportunity to regain his lost form.
