Dhruv Jurel Comeback: India’s Young Sensation Dhruv Jurel added a new climax to the ongoing debate surrounding India’s backup wicketkeeper for the upcoming India vs. New Zealand three-match ODI series.

Recently in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26, Jurel impressed everyone with his incredible knocks, scoring 160 runs unbeaten off 101 balls against Baroda in Rajkot. The knock was more special because it came days before when Ajit Agarkar led the selection committee.

As of now, KL Rahul is the player who has locked his spot as a wicketkeeper-batter in the Indian ODI team, whereas Rishabh Pant and Ishan Kishan have not, despite Jurel being part of India’s last two ODI series in 2025.

Pant made his comeback in the ODI setup in July 2024 against Sri Lanka. He was part of India’s Champions Trophy 2025 squad but was not part of the Playing XI. Meanwhile, Ishan Kishan has been in red-hot form ahead of the New Zealand series. Recently he led Jharkhand to win their maiden Syed Mushtaq Ali and smashed a century in the very first match of the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26.

The 23-year-old Jurel now broke silence on his call-up for the New Zealand ODI series.

He said,

“I don’t set too many goals for myself. I focus on the process. Even before the Vijay Hazare Trophy, when I got some time, I was batting for 4-5 hours and creating scenarios in my mind about what I can do. Whatever the result and selection may be, no one can take my hard work away from me. That’s why I work hard. It has brought me this far and will take me further.”

Jurel had earned his maiden ODI call-up for the Australia tour in October, but the selectors went with Pant for the next series, against South Africa. So he is yet to make his debut in the ODI format.
