An unforgettable scene unfolded at Busch Stadium as a large group of St. Louis Cardinals fans shed their shirts and filled an empty section in right field during the team’s dramatic extra-inning walk-off win against the Kansas City Royals on Friday night. The spontaneous display of enthusiasm significantly amplified the already electric atmosphere.
Fans Take Over Right Field Section
The game was tied 3-3 in the bottom of the ninth inning when the movement began. What started with about 100 fans migrating to an empty section in right field quickly escalated. As the game progressed into extra innings, the entire section became packed with shirtless supporters, turning the area into a focal point of the game’s energy.
The idea reportedly originated from Caleb Cummings, a 20-year-old on the Stephen F. Austin club baseball team. He proposed to a friend that they head to the right field bleachers and start waving their shirts. “We had no intentions of it getting that big — we were just going out there to have fun,” Cummings told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The trend caught on rapidly, with Bryce Bradford being one of the first to remove his shirt and wave it energetically. Soon, fans of all ages, from children to individuals in their 80s, joined the movement, with parents bringing their children to participate.
Walk-Off Victory Caps Electric Atmosphere
The fervent energy of the shirtless fans reached its peak in the bottom of the 11th inning when Yohel Pozo hit a pinch-hit line drive for the game-winning run. The crowd in the right-field stands erupted, celebrating the Cardinals’ fourth walk-off victory of the season. The Cardinals ultimately secured a 5-4 win over the Royals.
Manager Praises Fan Energy
St. Louis Cardinals manager Oli Marmol acknowledged the significant impact of the fans’ energy during his postgame press conference. “Whoever started that in right field, I’ll do whatever I need to do to make sure they come to every game,” Marmol said. “Because that was awesome. Not only them, but everybody that showed up today. That was a fun environment.”
Marmol emphasized that the fans’ enthusiasm created a challenging environment for visiting teams and contributed positively to the home-field advantage. “It creates an environment where, it’s not only filling this place up, it’s making it a tough place for other teams to come in and play,” he stated. “That was pretty damn cool. I’ll sign up for that, any day.” The Cardinals, now with a 26-18 record, are set to continue their series against the Royals (19-26) on Saturday.
