Ahead of the ODI series against South Africa, the BCCI has issued a clear and stern message to both senior players. Having already retired from Test and T20 cricket, these two veterans are now part of Team India only in the ODI format, but to continue playing, they must meet the need to fulfill some demands of BCCI.

The BCCI has now made it very clear that to secure a place in the ODI team, players must prove themselves by performing well in domestic tournaments. According to reports, the Indian board has asked both Rohit and Virat to play in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. This tournament will commence on December 24th, while India’s next ODI series, after the home series against South Africa, is against New Zealand starting January 11th, 2026. Therefore, it is believed that before getting selected for this series, both players will have to prove their fitness and form by playing domestically.

These two batsmen certainly scored runs on the Australia tour, but the selectors believe that a team cannot be built solely on the basis of overseas series. The Board wants to give opportunities to young players while also ensuring that senior players understand the importance of domestic cricket.

The good news is that Rohit Sharma has already informed the Mumbai Cricket Association that he wants to play in the Vijay Hazare Trophy as well as the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy. This tournament runs from November 26 to December 18. Meanwhile, the situation regarding Virat Kohli is unclear. He is currently spending time with his family. If Virat does not agree to the board’s conditions, it could raise serious questions about his future.
