Ashes 2025, AUS vs ENG: The England great Joe Root, after smashing his first hundred in Australia in the ongoing Ashes 2025 in the second test, had a special message for Matthew Hayden and his family. The 34-year-old had finally ended the drought of his three-figure mark in Australia by smashing a hundred at the Gabba, Brisbane.
Not only this, but Root remained unbeaten with a score of 138 runs as visitors posted more than 300 runs on the board.

Before the beginning of the Ashes 2025, former Australian opener Matthew Hayden stated that he would walk naked around the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) if Joe Root doesn’t score a hundred in the ongoing five-match test series.
But Joe Root had different plans; he smashed a hundred in three innings to save Hayden and the Australian public.

After Root smashed his hundred, Hayden, without wasting even a single second, congratulated Root. Before the start of the game on Day 3, Root finally responded to Hayden’s praise, stating that it felt nice to receive some good words from the legendary player.
Joe Root said,
“Actually, it’s really nice of him to give me the confidence and backing in the first place. But yeah, it’s kind of him to send those words, and he’s obviously a great Australian, and he’s done special things in the game.”
Talking about the second test of the Ashes test, England won the toss and opted to bat first. The visiting team posted 334 runs on the board after Joe Root and Zak Crawley’s runs in Brisbane.
“So obviously, it’s nice to get that from him, but yeah, as well, to the Australian public that they don’t have to witness that. And his family, I think, they’ll be quite happy too.”

After Joe Root’s century on the opening test of the Gabba test, Hayden jokingly said that no one had more skin in the game than him and congratulated the former England skipper on finally getting a well-deserved century in Australia.
He said,
“Congratulations, mate, on a hundred here in Australia. It took you a while, and there was no one who had more skin in the game than me. Literally, I was backing you for a hundred in a good way. Congratulations, ten fifties and finally a hundred. You little ripper, mate. Have a beauty and bloody enjoy it.”
On Day 3, Australia took the lead of almost 132 runs, posting a score of 511 runs. Currently, Australia is leading in the series by 1-0, and it will be interesting to see what the result will be in the second test of the Ashes 2025.
