Andre Russell Retirement: Andre Russell, known worldwide for his explosive hitting, has announced his retirement from the IPL. The good news is that Russell and Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) relationship isn’t coming to an end, but he will be joining the franchise as a support staff member and serve as a power coach for the team. In the next season, he will guide players on key aspects of power-hitting and fitness.
Andre Russell Retirement From IPL

Russell’s IPL journey has been a special one for KKR. He joined the team in the year 2014 and has since played 133 matches for the franchise. His powerful batting and ability to turn the tide of a match have made him one of the league’s most dangerous all-rounders. Russell was part of the KKR team that won the IPL title twice, in 2014 and 2024.
His explosive batting has many memorable moments. He single-handedly won matches on numerous occasions, and his death-over bowling on numerous occasions rescued the team from trouble situations. This was why KKR retained him for ₹12 crore before the last mega auction.
But IPL 2025 did not go as expected for him. Throughout the season, Russell failed to make the impact that is expected from him. In batting, he managed just 167 runs in 13 innings and bowled 8 wickets, but his economy rate was around 12 runs per over.
This was the second consecutive season in which his performance was disrupting the team’s plans. Consequently, the franchise took the difficult step of releasing him ahead of the IPL 2026.
Andre Russell Retirement: Russell To Join KKR In New Role

KKR has always treated Russell like family, and that is why, even though he will no longer be part of the team as a player, he is being included in a key position within the support staff.
Power hitting has always been Russell’s greatest strength, whether it’s hitting sixes over 110 meters or his ability to change games in the final overs. KKR management believes that the team’s young players can learn a lot from Russell’s experience.

Russell himself has repeatedly stated that KKR is very close to his heart. Therefore, this decision marks the beginning of a new chapter for him. While his presence on the field may be reduced, his energy, passion, and winning mentality in the dressing room will always benefit the team.
The upcoming season will be interesting because, for the first time, Russell will be a part of KKR’s campaign through strategy, guidance, and training, rather than bat and ball. Fans will certainly feel that a major player will now work behind the scenes, but his influence on the team will remain the same.
This new journey for Russell is a new beginning for KKR, and he will always be remembered in IPL history as the player who created a storm on the field and is now leading the team forward in a new role.
