Asia Cup 2025: Sunil Gavaskar Makes Bold Claim On Shubman Gill & Sanju Samson As Openers
Before the start of Asia Cup 2025, the biggest question about Team India's playing-11 has been this: who will be opening for India in the upcoming tournament? If Shubman Gill, who has been made the vice-captain of the team this time, opens, will Sanju Samson sit out? This is the discussion going on in everyone's mind, including veteran cricketers and experts. Meanwhile, former Indian captain and great batsman Sunil Gavaskar has made this debate more interesting by making a big statement.
Gavaskar said that it would not be right to sit out a batsman like Sanju Samson after selecting him in the team. He suggested that if the opening pair of Gill and Abhishek Sharma is retained, then Samson can be fielded at number 3. According to him, Samson is such a player that he can play the role of not only top order but also finisher at number 6 if needed.
Gavaskar said,
"It is a good headache for the selection committee that you have openers like Gill and Abhishek and also a brilliant batsman like Samson. Samson will definitely be given preference over Jitesh Sharma in the first one or two matches. After that his form will decide whether he remains in the playing-11 or not."
Gavaskar also described backup wicketkeeper Jitesh Sharma as a good option as a finisher but made it clear that Sanju Samson will be the first choice in the initial matches. It is worth noting that for the last year, Sanju Samson was playing the responsibility of opening with Abhishek Sharma in the T20 team, and he had performed brilliantly. At that time Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal were busy in Test and ODI cricket, due to which Samson got this role. But now the situation has changed after Gill's return to the Asia Cup squad, and he was made the vice-captain.
