No Point In Having Him....: India’s Test Skipper Shubman Gill Left Out Of Asia Cup 2025 Plans

Shubman Gill left out of Asia Cup 2025 plans squad for the Indian team

The Indian Test Captain Shubman Gill's Asia Cup 2025 fate was all set until the media reports went viral that the team management and the Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI selection committee stated that currently he does not fit into the team's T20 plans setup.

Shubman led team India in the five-match test series against England, and that outing stood out to be the best of his career as a debutant skipper. He and his team made sure to make the series a draw at 2-2. After such a powerful outing in England, it was all there that he will be making his T20I return for India in the Asia Cup 2025. Many also supported him to take over the captaincy in the shortest format too. However, according to the latest reports, it is learned that he won't be on the flight to Dubai for the tournament commencing on September 9.

The report added that there have been various discussions before the Asia Cup 2025 selection meeting in Mumbai, where every combination was explored so that Gill can find his place in the XI. We all know how good Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson did as openers for the last 12 months, so management is trying to stick with them. There were also discussions about Gill being replaced by Tilak Varma, but the management felt that it would be a bit unfair to bench Tilak, who has been a consistent batter in the T20I format.

A BCCI source said,

"If Gill is included, then he will straight away bat at the top, and if he doesn't get a game, then there is no point in having him. At the same time, it will be unfair to Sanju, who has done well. If Gill gets in, then Sanju might have to miss out, and Jitesh might get a game."

There was also discussion about whether they should pick Gill instead of Yashasvi Jaiswal, who was part of the T20 World Cup squad but did not get a chance to play. But that decision was dropped by the management.

The selectors and management are now all set to announce the squad for the Asia Cup on August 19.
