Irfan Pathan Speaks Out On Rohit Sharma's Sydney Test Interview Controversy
Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan shared a sneak peek of Rohit Sharma's interview in the Sydney Test, and after that he decided to step back from the test against Australia due to his poor form. In the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, Rohit missed the first test at Perth and scored 164 runs, smashing a half century in three tests he played. His average dropped to 6.20, which is the lowest ever by any visiting captain in Australia in a minimum of five innings.
Irfan Pathan, who interviewed Rohit Sharma with Jatin Sapru in Sydney, revealed that the broadcasters were in support of the then Indian captain, no matter what his form was going on at that moment. He admitted that if Rohit had not been the captain, he would have been dropped by the management.
Irfan said,
"Rohit Sharma is an amazing player in white-ball cricket, but his average in Test cricket that year was 6, so we said that if he was not the captain, he would not have had a place in the team, and this is true."
Further, he stated,
"People say that we supported Rohit Sharma more than necessary. Of course, when someone comes to interview on your broadcasting channel, you will not misbehave with them, right? You have invited him, so you will behave politely. When Rohit came to interview, we were, of course, polite, and we had to show that because he was our guest. So that was connected and said we were supporting him, but it was we who said we had said that he should keep fighting, but that said, he should not have had a place in the playing XI. If he was not the captain of the team, he would have been dropped."
The tour of Australia turned out to be the last test for Rohit Sharma, including Virat Kohli. Before the start of the five-match crucial test series against England, both the star players announced their retirement.
