The Indian cricket star duo Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have announced their retirement from two formats, including T20I and Test Cricket. Their retirement from the T20I format came after India lifted the trophy of the T20 World Cup 2024 on June 29 after a long wait of 17 years. And after that, before the start of a crucial five-match test series against England, the duo announced their retirement within a span of five days; this was something that shocked the entire cricket community. However, it was believed that both will be preparing for the 2027 ODI World Cup and will be focusing on their fitness, as this is the only ICC tournament left they will be playing together, which they haven't won yet. But now it is believed that the tournament, which is to be played after 2 years in South Africa, looks easy, but in reality it is not. With the Indian team going through a transition phase in the test cricket, it is believed that the same thing can be applied to the ODI format as well. If the same thing applies to this, then new faces will be seen in the next edition of the ODI World Cup 2027.

The ODI World Cup 2023 win would have been the best for Kohli to win the ODI World Cup for the second time after the 2011 win and for Rohit to win his first. However, the loss against Australia on November 19, 2023, was something that is still unhealed.

It is reported that the BCCI has different plans for the upcoming ODI World Cup, as Rohit and Virat are uncertain, so the management is all set to go with the future.

A recent source stated,

"Yes, it will be discussed soon. We still have more than two years for the next World Cup (November 2027). Both Kohli and Rohit will be pushing 40 by then, so there has to be a clear plan ahead for the big event, as our last win was in 2011. We also need to try out a few youngsters in time."

The age factor of the star duo is one of the factors that is becoming an obstacle in front of them. Until the end of 2026, India will be playing 27 ODIs, and this is the only time fans will be able to see a glimpse of them.

The source added,

"Look, both Kohli and Rohit have made huge contributions to white-ball cricket for the team and the sport in general. They have achieved almost everything. Therefore, I believe that no one will coerce them, but they will engage in candid and professional discussions prior to the commencement of the next ODI cycle to assess their mental and physical condition. It depends on that."

Now it will be interesting to see whether Rohit and Virat will be playing or fully fit for the ODI World Cup 2027 or not.
