ENG vs IND: Sanjay Manjrekar Criticizes Gautam Gambhir For Dropping Karun Nair
The fourth test between England and India at Old Trafford, Manchester, after a draw, came out with many interesting debates one after another. Team India's head coach Gautam Gambhir, in a statement, said that Karun Nair was not dropped from the team, but Sai Sudarshan was given a chance considering the team combination. According to Gambhir, it would have been more beneficial to get a left-handed batsman at number 3 against England's bowlers; this is the reason why Sai Sudarshan was selected.
Not only this, but he also talked about the selection of Anshul Kamboj. Gambhir said that the weather was cloudy on the day of the match, and in such a situation he felt that Anshul could perform better in those conditions.
But former cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar raised many questions about this strategy of Gambhir. Manjrekar clearly said that if a player has been dropped from the team, then he has been 'dropped.' He refused to accept Gambhir's argument and said that just by saying a word does not change the truth.
Manjrekar further added that Gambhir's strategy has often been weak in Test cricket. He said that the team did play well in the fourth Test, but India is still trailing 1-2 in the series. He also reminded them that India had lost 3-0 to New Zealand at home and was badly defeated in Australia as well.
According to him, the passion of the current team is visible due to the hard work and fighting spirit of the players, not due to the coaching strategy. Manjrekar believes that many times Gambhir's thinking in team selection has been confusing.
Manjrekar also expressed his opinion on "external noise" in cricket, i.e., criticism from outside the team. He said that the people who criticize are also a part of this game and speak for the country. He urged Gambhir to be a little relaxed, accept criticism with an open heart, and not be afraid to face tough questions.
It is clear from this debate that there are differences between people inside and outside the team regarding selection and strategy. The real question is whether Team India will be able to rise above this difference and win the last test.
