Manjrekar Believes Shubman Gill's Aggression Not Comparable to Virat Kohli's Fiery Nature
The Indian Test captain Shubman Gill's father, Lakhwinder Singh, was his first coach in his cricketing career, who spotted early talent and supported him throughout his journey. It feels really good to be God's favorite when your family identifies your talent and supports you through every difficulty. Shubman's father, Lakhwinder Singh, has consistently supported him, being present during both the highs and lows of his career.
Just like many, former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar believes that Lakhsinder Singh plays a very crucial role in Shubman's success, as he laid a strong foundation in a young kid and has made him well prepared for tough situations.
Many challenges came in the new Indian Test captain's way before the start of the series; questions were being raised about his voice, records in SENA countries, etc. The criticism did get a bit less after the Edgbaston Test, but again the Lord's loss raised questions, despite him being the run machine in the series. After Lord's test, India had the chance to be 2-1, but currently they are 1-2, trailing in the series.
The fourth test won't be an easy task for Shubman Gill & Co., as the Indian camp is full of injuries; players like Nitish Kumar Reddy and Akash Deep won't get to feature in the Manchester Test.
In the Lord's Test, the spotlight was on Gill not for his performance but for his aggressive nature, as he got involved with Ben Stokes and the team. To this, Manjrekar believes that Gill is not naturally aggressive if compared to Kohli.
He said,
"If Shubman Gill had that kind of a fiery side to him, we would have seen it a little earlier. You don't have to show it when you're the captain. Or did he show it because he's got this confidence now that he's won a Test match, and he's got so many runs? Because with Virat Kohli, you could see that he was ready for a scrap. He was always waiting to get in the thick of things. Even when he wasn't a captain, you could see him coming in there. So that was a trait that we'd seen even before he was captain. With Shubman Gill, I've never seen it before."
Further, Manjrekar stated that the Manchester Test will be a tough one for Gill, and his father's role will be very important in that test, which will let him know whether his son has more qualities of Virat Kohli or of MS Dhoni.
He said,
"There are a lot of good people around him. His father (who played a big part as he grew up pursuing a career in cricket), in fact, would know him, would know his child, whether he's a Virat Kohli, potential Virat Kohli, or (MS) Dhoni, or somewhere in between. I'm guessing somewhere in between. So he's got to find his own way. But whatever way that is, it's got to be a way that will enhance his leadership qualities and make him a better batter."
