Lot Of Players Are Coached...: R Ashwin Lauds Shubman Gill's Genuine Approach In Press Conferences
Former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin heaps praise on new Indian Test skipper Shubman Gill for his incredible confidence in the press conference, stating that he is not trying to put on a show there but rather acting like the way he is in real life. After Rohit Sharma's retirement from Test cricket, Gill has been handed over the role to lead the team. However, in his first test as captain at Leeds, he failed to win, but in the Edgbaston second test, he and his team won their first test. The win was special in many ways.
It seems like the new skipper is not bothered by the pressure of expectations put on him, focusing more on the team game and fulfilling the place of number 4 at the same time, which was previously filled by the most successful Indian test skipper and player, Virat Kohli.
In the press conference, Gill looks really calm and composed with the reporters, answering their tricky questions with full patience and smartly.
To this, in a recently shared YouTube video, R. Ashwin praised Gill's calmness in the press conference. He said,
"Shubman has a natural flair. I was watching his press conference, and I immediately found that he is not putting on a show. He is talking like who he is. He is leading the team according to his natural self and skills."
Further, he stated that during the press conference, the media often try to put captains under pressure to lower their morale. He said,
"In overseas tours, the media tries to target the captain because if you bring the captain down, it becomes easy to bring the team down. You can get them to fall like ninepins if you go after the captain."
He also made a bold statement stating players are generally taught and coached on how to handle media interactions, but he believes the same is not done with Gill, as he speaks with his originality and whole confidence.
He said,
"Don't take it out of context, but a lot of players are coached about what to say and what not to. That doesn't seem to be the case with Shubman Gill. He looks like a man who is doing what he believes in."
