MS Dhoni Secures Trademark For 'Captain Cool' Nickname
Former Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni filed for a trademark application for the nickname ‘Captain Cool’, a name that fans have given him for his calm and composed nature on and off the field. It is reported that he wanted exclusive rights to use the ‘Captain Cool’ nickname for sports training, coaching services and training centres.
According to the Trade Mark Registry Portal, Dhoni’s application has now been accepted and advertised. The trademark was published in the official trademark journal on June 16, 2025.
Dhoni’s lawyer, Mansi Aggarwal, said,
“Delighted to share a recent development from the field of trademark law that underscored the evolving role of personality rights and acquired distinctiveness in overcoming relative grounds for refusal.”
However, she also said that this journey didn’t come without any hurdles. When for the first time Dhoni’s team registered for the trademark, the registry raised an objection under Section 11(1) of the Trade Marks Act. The main problem was that it might confuse people because there was a similar mark already on record.
But his team fought for it and stated that the nickname is linked with him only and also put it forward that the nickname has been widely used by the fans and the media for years and has now become part of his public identity or can say its other name by which people know him
