AB de Villiers Questions Jasprit Bumrah's Limited Role In ENG vs IND Test Series
India's finest pacer Jasprit Bumrah is likely to miss the second Test against England at Edgbaston. Before the start of this series, we all knew that Bumrah would not play all the tests and would be seen playing only three tests out of five. The question is, he has played in Leeds, which was the first test; there are no chances of him playing in the second, which will be played at Edgbaston. Now the doubt is that out of the remaining 4 tests, which are those 2 tests in which Bumrah will get featured?
Talking about all this, former South African legendary batsman AB de Villiers is very shocked about Jasprit Bumrah's workload management, and he even compared Bumrah's condition with Dale Steyn's condition. He also stated how Steyn was given relief in less important series so that he could play the important Test series coming up.
Team India faced defeat in the first test against England at Leeds, and now their main bowlers will not be seen playing in the second test, which will be played at Edgbaston from 2 July.
de Villiers on his YouTube channel that,
"Bumrah is currently the top bowler in the world in all formats. So, it is very difficult to decide how to rest him. But in my opinion, Test cricket is the best format of the game. And in my opinion, this Test series would have probably been the series to prepare him for all five Test matches.”
Further, de Villiers explains why he compared Bumrah's condition to Dale Steyn's and how Steyn's workload was managed at that time.
He said,
“That is what we used to do with Dale (Steyn). Rest him in the less important T20 and ODI series and prepare him for the big Test series away from home against Australia, England and India... to some extent against New Zealand, depending on the rankings at the time.”
The matter did not end there. De Villiers also questioned the Indian team management as to why they took such a decision. In his statement, de Villiers said,
“I don't know if it was mismanagement or maybe because he had recently returned from an injury; he treated the IPL as a warm-up phase. Maybe he went to a surgeon who told him. You cannot play five Test matches. So, I mean, you have to respect that, and at the end of the day, it's up to Team India to manage that well. There can't be anything bigger than this, guys, except maybe the WTC Final."
Bumrah had earlier informed the BCCI about his availability for the series, as his surgeon had explained to him that he needs to be smart about his workload, and we all know how important Bumrah is for Team India.
