Nicholas Pooran Retires From International Cricket At 29

Nicholas Pooran's Retirement From International Cricket Sparks Franchise Cricket Debate
Published on

West Indies wicketkeeper-batsman Nicholas Pooran suddenly made a big decision to retire from international cricket on Monday night. Pooran has retired from all three formats. The decision comes at a time when South African wicketkeeper-batsman Heinrich Klaasen has also recently retired from international cricket. Pooran now wants to focus fully on franchise cricket. This decision has raised concerns among cricket fans that this trend is not a threat to the future of international cricket. In the last few years, many big players have left international cricket and focused on franchise leagues. Pooran is one such player, who has led the West Indies team and has now become the latest example.

In his Instagram post, Pooran wrote,

"After much thought, I have decided to retire from international cricket. This sport has given me so much—joy, purpose, memorable moments, and the opportunity to represent the people of the West Indies. Wearing a maroon jersey, standing up for the national anthem, and playing with full strength every time on the field is beyond words for me". I got the opportunity to captain the team, which will always be a matter of pride for me. "All your love and support have helped me through difficult times and celebrated in good times. Thank you also to my family, friends, and teammates who have supported me in this journey."

Pooran stated that even though his international career is coming to an end, his love for West Indies cricket will never finish. He also wished further success and strength for the team and the region. The 29-year-old Pooran has played the most matches for the West Indies in T20 Internationals so far. He played a total of 106 matches and has become the highest run-scorer for the team by scoring 2,275 runs. His contribution at both the wicketkeeping and batting levels proved out to be the best for team over the years.

This decision of Pooran has raised many questions about whether more players are likely to prefer franchise cricket in the future, which could take away the shine of international cricket. Especially when nowadays many players are taking this step even in the best phase of their age.
