Sunil Gavaskar Slams Lack Of Recognition For Shreyas Iyer In KKR's 2024 IPL Win

Shreyas Iyer's Uncredited Role in KKR's 2024 IPL Victory Sparks Debate

Summary

Sunil Gavaskar criticizes the lack of recognition for Shreyas Iyer's role in KKR's 2024 IPL victory, despite his impressive performance as captain. Iyer, now with Punjab Kings, continues to excel, contributing to the team's strong position in the 2025 season. Gavaskar emphasizes the importance of the captain's role over others in the dugout.

Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar believes that Shreyas Iyer didn't get the credit he deserved in the win of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in 2024; instead, the credit went somewhere else. After a long drought of trophies in KKR, Iyer was the captain who led the team effortlessly, making the franchise win their third title. In 2024 he scored 351 runs in 14 innings at an average of 39, smashing two fifties.

Even after having such a successful year with KKR last year, Iyer was not retained by the franchise and was sold to Punjab Kings in the IPL 2025 mega auction for a whopping amount of 26.7 crores, becoming the second most expensive player in the auction.

Talking about his performance in Punjab Kings, he's giving his whole energy, and currently the team stands at the third spot in the points table. To which we can say that he's enjoying his time with his current franchise.

In a recent interview, Gavaskar said,

"He didn't get the credit for the IPL victory last season. All the plaudits were given to someone else. It's the captain who plays a major role in what's happening in the middle and not someone sitting in the dugout. See, this year he's getting fair credit. No one is giving all the credit to Ricky Ponting."

The 30-year-old has been in good form since last year, especially since the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, scoring 405 runs from 11 innings at an average of 50.62, smashing four fifties.

This time, under Shreyas Iyer's leadership, we can expect that Punjab Kings can win their first-ever title in the tournament if they go strong like this in some couple of the matches left.
