Shubman Gill Ideal For Captaincy But Lack Experience: Moeen Ali
Former England player Moeen Ali has picked Shubman Gill as the right choice to lead the Indian Test team but also pointed out his lack of experience. Gill has captained Gujarat Titans in the IPL, but the challenges of Test cricket are different. The BCCI may have to consider Gill due to Bumrah's fitness.
The two Indian star batters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have recently retired from Test cricket. Now all eyes are on who will be the next Indian Test captain. Reports have suggested the name of Shubman Gill, who could lead the team in the five-Test series against England starting June 20.
Meanwhile, England's senior all-rounder Moeen Ali has made a big statement about Shubman Gill. He believes that Gill has the potential to become a captain, but he does not have much experience of Test captaincy.
In an interview, Moeen Ali said, "I think Shubman Gill will get the captaincy. He is a smart player, having captained Gujarat Titans in the IPL. But in Test cricket, captaincy is completely different. Especially in places like England, where the conditions are very tough.”
He further said that the BCCI previously wanted to make Jasprit Bumrah the captain, but his fitness has always been a concern. Bumrah also led India to victory while captaining against Australia, but after that he was out for a long time due to injury. For this reason, the board probably will not want to take the risk.
SHUBMAN GILL'S TEST CAREER
Gill has played a total of 32 Test matches for India so far and has scored around 1900 runs. His average is around 35. However, his performance abroad has not been anything special. Playing outside, he averages just 29 and has scored his only Test century against Bangladesh.
Now it will be interesting to see whether the BCCI gives the responsibility of captaincy to Gill in this challenging series or any other player gets a chance.
