Although India started the tournament with a historic win of 295 runs in Perth, after that they had a horrific tournament, leading to a disappointing 3-1 defeat to Australia. With that they also lost the chance to qualify for the World Test Championship (WTC) Final at Lord's. Australia will be playing the WTC final with South Africa in June.

In the BGT, the star batters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma received a lot of criticism for their overall performance in the tournament. Virat scored 190 runs in five matches in nine innings at an average of 23.75, scoring a century in Perth. However, Rohit missed the first Test due to some personal reasons and joined the team in the second Test, scoring 31 runs in three matches and five innings at an average of 6.20.

In January, BCCI issued strict guidelines for the Senior Men's Cricket Team to maintain strict discipline and promote team unity during the tours. The guidelines also included the information about travel, baggage limits, family visits and many more things. Players were expected to travel with the team in the same transport. If there are any exceptions, the things must be approved by the head coach and chairman of the selection committee.
