Mohammad Kaif Predicts Secure Future for Rohit Sharma's Captaincy Amid Doubts
The Indian team will start its Champions Trophy campaign today under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma. India's first match will be played against Bangladesh at the Dubai International Stadium. Last year, under Rohit's captaincy, India won the T20 World Cup. But the future of Rohit's captaincy has been in doubt for quite some time now. The main reason for this is Rohit's poor performance in the Border Gavaskar Trophy.
However, former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif has a different opinion in this matter. Kaif believes that the Hitmen will continue to play and will be safe till the ICC World Cup 2027.
Rohit had performed poorly in the Test series against New Zealand and Australia, after which there was a lot of doubt about his future in the Test format. But in the second match of the recently concluded ODI series against England, he made a strong comeback from the Hitman by scoring a century.
Rohit retired from the T20 format in 2024 itself. There is no doubt that 38-year-old Rohit is at the last stage of his career. There is also a lot of concern among the team management about his form. But Mohammad Kaif has dismissed all these rumors. Speaking on her YouTube channel recently, Kaif said,
"What Rohit Sharma has done as a captain is not everyone's cup of tea. He led his team to the final of the 2023 World Cup. We haven't played too much ODI cricket after that. God forbid, if India play poorly, the coach can get into trouble, but not Rohit Sharma. In Tests, you can look for opportunities, but in ODIs there is no question about his place. "
Kaif further said that Rohit has proved to be a very good captain for the Indian team and his record is also excellent. He believes that even if Rohit falters in the ICC Champions Trophy, he will be safe for the 2027 World Cup.
"He has been in great form, has scored a century and has captained the team very well. If we look at the win percentage, their ODI record is fantastic. So, I think even if the Indian team performs poorly, Rohit Sharma will be safe and will continue playing till the 2027 World Cup," Kaif said.
