Marcus Stoinis Bids Farewell to ODIs, Withdraws from Champions Trophy
Before the start of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, Australia's finest all-rounder Marcus Stoinis has surprised everyone by making a big announcement. On Thursday, Stoinis announced that he is retiring from ODIs with immediate effect to focus on T20 cricket.
Speaking on his decision, Stoinis said,
"Playing ODI cricket for Australia has been an incredible journey, and I'm grateful for every moment I spent on the green and gold ground. Representing my country at the highest level is something I will always cherish. "
He further said,
"It wasn't an easy decision, but I believe it's the right time for me to step away from ODIs and concentrate fully on the next chapter of my career. I have a fantastic relationship with Ron (Australia men's team coach Andrew McDonald) and I greatly appreciate his support. "I will cheer on the boys in Pakistan. "
Stoinis was included in Australia's provisional 15-member squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 to be held in Pakistan and UAE this month but will now be replaced by another player in the final squad to be announced by February 12.
Stoinis is currently playing for Durban Super Giants in the South Africa T20 franchise competition. Stoinis' last ODI match was against Pakistan in Perth in November 2024. Stoinis played a total of 71 ODIs and scored a total of 1,495 runs, as well as taking 48 wickets. Stoinis' highest score in this format is 146 *. Stoinis was part of Australia's ODI World Cup title triumph in 2023.
Andrew McDonald said after the 35-year-old all-rounder's retirement from ODIs,
"Stoinis has been an important part of our ODI setup over the last decade. He has not only been an invaluable player, but also an incredible person in the group."
