BPL 2025: 10 Players Suspected In Major Match-Fixing Scandal
The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2025 is once again in the controversy. Earlier, there were delays in payment of players and ticketing disputes, and now the league is facing serious allegations of match-fixing.
The Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has received information from secret sources and media reports that 8 matches of this season are considered suspicious. In these matches, questions have been raised on the performance of some players and the strategies of the teams. According to reports, a total of 10 players are suspected, including 6 Bangladesh national players, 2 uncapped, and 2 foreign cricketers.
Which teams are under the radar of questioning?
Some matches of the four big teams of the BPL are being considered suspicious. Alleged irregularities have been observed in the matches of these teams:
• Durbar Monarchy
• Dhaka Capitals
• Sylhet Strikers
• Chittagong Kings
These 8 matches are under suspicion.
BCB's Anti-Corruption Unit is conducting a thorough investigation of these 8 matches:
January 6: Fortune Barishal vs. Durbar Rajshahi
January 7: Rangpur Riders vs. Dhaka Capitals
January 10: Dhaka Capitals vs. Sylhet Strikers
January 12: Durbar Rajshahi vs. Dhaka Capitals
January 13: Chittagong Kings vs. Sylhet Strikers
January 22: Fortune Barishal vs. Khulna Tigers
January 22: Chittagong Kings v Sylhet Strikers
January 23: Durbar Rajshahi vs. Rangpur Riders
What activities led to suspicion?
These matches saw a number of suspicious incidents, deepening suspicions of fixing:
1. Three consecutive wides and no-balls by the bowlers, which benefited the opposition team.
2. Strange selection of the playing XI, which raised questions on the team's strategy.
3. Intentionally slow batting while chasing the target, which affected the game.
Taking these allegations of match-fixing seriously, the BCB has formed an independent investigation committee, which will work with the ACU to get to the bottom of the matter. The Board has made it clear that it is committed to maintaining integrity in cricket, and any kind of malpractice will not be tolerated.
The BCB said in its official statement, "We strictly comply with the ICC Anti-Corruption Code. If any player or team is proven guilty of fixing, strict action will be taken against them.”
There have been allegations of fixing on BPL before.
Significantly, this is not the first time that the issue of fixing in BPL has arisen. In 2014, former Bangladesh captain Mohammad Ashraful was found guilty of spot-fixing, after which he was banned for 8 years.
Now it has to be seen how strict action the BCB takes this time and whether the culprits get strict punishment or this matter will also go into cold storage as before.
