India's Batting Coach Sitanshu Kotak Updates On Mohammad Shami's Fitness Ahead Of 3rd T20I
The Indian star pacer has not played for India since the ODI World Cup final in November 2023 and underwent an ankle surgery in February last year. He has been picked for the ongoing five-match T20I series against England following three ODIs and the Champions Trophy. Although he is not facing any fitness issue, still there's no call made on him playing the remaining games in the T20I; he did not get a chance in the first two matches. However, the absence of him playing the games raised many questions among the fans about his health. He played first-class and List A cricket for Bengal but has yet to don the Indian jersey on the field again.
India's newly appointed batting coach, Sitanshu Kotak, gave an update on Shami ahead of the third T20I against England. He stated that Shami is fit, but the decision of him playing is something that he can't answer.
"Yes, Shami is fit, but something about him playing or not playing, I am not the one who can answer."
The third T20I between India and England will be played on January 28 at the Niranjan Shah Stadium, Rajkot. Although Shami is in the squad, he has not played the first two matches; it has to be seen whether he will be in the playing XI of the third T20I or not.
Further, Kotak said that the decision of Shami playing will be made by coach Gautam Gambhir and skipper Suryakumar Yadav.
"There is definitely a plan (for Shami) for coming matches as well and one-dayers, but the coach Gautam and obviously Surya will take a call. And fitness, definitely not a problem depending on how they are planning to build this load."
In the five-match T20I series, India is leading with a margin of 2-0; by winning the third match, they can seal the series to their name.
