Punjab Kings has officially named Shreyas Iyer as their captain for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. Last year, Iyer led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to win their third title in the tournament, but it turned out to be a shock when he was not retained by the franchise for the upcoming years. He was the second most expensive player in the IPL 2025 mega auction, bought by Punjab Kings for Rs 26.75 crores. The news of him being the 17th player to take up the role of captain was announced on the TV reality show Bigg Boss 18, in which he appeared with his teammates Yuzvendra Chahal and Shashank Singh.

"Because of lack of communication, we parted ways mutually." - Shreyas Iyer

In a latest interview, Iyer said that he had a fantastic time winning the title for KKR. He loved every moment spent there, but after a few months, there was a layover, and no effort was seen in retention talks. He also said that because of a lack of communication, he decided to part ways with the franchise.

"Certainly, I had a fantastic time winning the championship at KKR. The fan following was outstanding; they were electrifying in the stadium, and I loved every moment I spent there. So obviously, we had a conversation straight after the IPL championship. But for a few months, there was a layover and no concrete effort in having a retention talk. I was perplexed about what was happening. So, because of a lack of communication, we came to a situation where we parted ways mutually. And that's the long and short of it."

Further, he said that he was disappointed because there was a lack of communication, and he got to know everything a week prior to the retention date. He cherished the time spent over there with Shah Rukh Khan, family, and everyone, and winning the title was an integral part of his life.

"Yes, obviously disappointed, because when you don't have a certain line of communication and if you get to know things one week prior to the retention date, then obviouly something is lacking over there. So I had to take a call. Whatever is written is supposed to happen. But other than that, I would just like to say that the time I spent over there with Shah Rukh Sir, the family, and all of them was phenomenal. And obviously, winning the championship was probably an integral part of my life."
