Punjab Kings Name Shreyas Iyer As Captain For IPL 2025 Season
The Indian cricketer Shreyas Iyer has been officially named as the new captain of the Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. Iyer was the second most expensive player in the IPL 2025 mega auction, bought by Punjab Kings for Rs 26.75 crore, which was held on November 24 and 25 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. With this, Iyer has become the 17th player to take up the role of captain of the franchise. The announcement was made on the TV reality show Big Boss 18, where Iyer appeared as a guest with teammates Yuzvendra Chahal and Shashank Singh.
Iyer, in a release, said that he is honored that the team showed faith in him and is looking forward to working with coach Ricky Ponting. He hopes to stand on the faith that management showed in him and deliver their maiden title.
"I am honored that the team has reposted its faith in me. I am looking forward to working again with coach (Ricky) Ponting. The team looks strong, with a great mix of potential and proven performers. I hope to repay the faith shown by the management to deliver our maiden title."
Ricky Ponting on the appointment of Iyer as captain of Punjab Kings said that he has a great mind for the game and has also proven his capabilities as captain. He also said that he enjoyed his past days working with Iyer in IPL and looked forward to working with him again.
"Shreyas has a great mind for the game. His proven capabilities as captain will enable the team to deliver. I have enjoyed my time with Iyer in the past in IPL, and I look forward to working with him again. With his leadership and the talent in the squad. I am excited about the seasons ahead."
The 30-year-old had a fabulous 2024, which showed his both personal and professional growth. He won the IPL 2024 for Kolkata Knight Riders as a skipper, also captained the Mumbai team winning the 2024 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, and was also part of the Ranji Trophy and Irani Trophy-winning Mumbai side.
