On This Day: India Clinched First Test Series Victory In Australia
On this day, January 7, 2019, India's long wait for winning a Test series in Australia ended under the captaincy of Virat Kohli at the Sydney Cricket Ground. India won the series 2-1 in a four-Test match series to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to their name.
The series could have ended 3-1 to India, but as always, rain proves to be a bad sign for the Men in Blue. The same thing happened in this series when Day 5 was washed out, which saved the hosts after India enforced the follow-on. This was Australia's first follow-on after 1988.
India won the first test in Adelaide by 31 runs and the third test in Melbourne by 137 runs, with the visitors winning the second test in Perth by 146 runs.
Jasprit Bumrah, as always, proved to be a key asset for Team India, taking 21 wickets at an average of 17.00. While from the batters, Cheteshwar Pujara played a tremendous role in the series, scoring 521 runs and smashing three centuries. Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant were the next players on the list of top run-scorers in the series, with 282 and 350 runs, respectively, hitting one century each.
India won the Test series in the tour of Australia in 2020-21, also registering a win of 2-1. However, in the recently concluded series, Australia managed to win the series 3-1, winning the title after almost a decade. This win of theirs helped them to book their spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) final with South Africa in June at Lord's.
