Rohit Sharma Reflects On India's 184-Run Defeat To Australia In Boxing Day Test
The fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy has been won by Australia by a big margin of 184 runs at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). Team India failed to chase the target of 340 runs, which resulted in their loss in the Melbourne Test. Yashasvi Jaiswal (84) was the lone warrior in the second innings but got out due to some irresponsible decisions made by the umpires. After this incident, Indian fans started to boo the Australians.
In the post-match presentation, Rohit Sharma talked about the reason they failed to chase the target given by the Aussies in the Boxing Day Test.
Rohit Sharma said that they knew 340 was not going to be easy for them, tried to perform by keeping wickets in hand for the last two sessions, but they bowled perfectly. He also said that there are many ways to win games, but they fell short in finding the ways.
"We knew 340 wasn't going to be easy. We tried to set a platform and keep wickets in hand for the last two sessions, but they bowled perfectly as well. We wanted to go for the target, but we didn't set the platform from our side. There are ways to win games, and we fell short in finding ways to win games."
Further, he stated that it's pretty disappointing, but they fought till the end and unfortunately lost it. He also said that even after having chances, they failed to achieve them.
"It is pretty disappointing. It's not that we went in with the intent of giving up the fight. We wanted to fight till the end, and unfortunately, we couldn't do it. It'll be tough to assess just the last two sessions. If you look at the overall Test match, we had our chances, but we didn't take them. We had Australia 90 for 6. We know things can get tough, but we want to play tough cricket in hard situations. I don't want to look at one situation. We were not good enough."
According to Rohit, the main reason that cost them the game was the last wicket partnership.
"I went back to my room and thought about what else we could have done as a team, but we threw everything we had, but they fought hard, especially that last-wicket partnership, which probably cost us the game there."
The fifth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy will kick off on December 3 at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
