Sunil Gavaskar Criticizes Ravichandran Ashwin's Sudden Retirement Amidst Series
Former Indian cricketing legend Sunil Gavaskar opened up on the retirement decision of Ravichandran Ashwin. The star Indian pacer announced his retirement after the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy ended in a draw and the series leveled to 1-1. In the press conference after the Test, he informed everyone in the press conference with the skipper, Rohit Sharma. This announcement was so sudden that some of the fans and players are not able to digest this news to now.
Gavaskar compared his retirement with MS Dhoni’s mid-series retirement during the 2014-15 Test series in Australia. Ashwin announced his retirement just after 10 years of Dhoni’s Test series in Australia.
The legendary cricketer Gavaskar feels that this kind of decision between the series disturbs team planning. Rather, he feels that Ashwin should announce that after the end of the series, he won’t be available for selection for India.
“He could have said, ‘Listen, after the end of the series, I won’t be available for selection for India. What it does is that, similarly to when MS Dhoni retired at the end of the 3rd Test in the 2014-15 series, it leaves you one short.”
Further, he supported the decision of backing so many players for a tour so that if any players get injured, they can select from the reserve in the team. India could have gone with two spinners, as in Sydney there is a lot of support on offer for spinners. In all total, Gavaskar is happy with this sudden retirement of Ashwin, which will definitely be impacting the Indian side.
