Sunil Gavaskar Predicts Rohit Sharma Will Step Down If Poor Form Continues
The Indian skipper Rohit Sharma is going through a hard time in the ongoing series against Australia. He missed the first Test in Perth due to some personal reasons, and in his absence, Jasprit Bumrah led the team, and the team won by a big margin of 295 runs. In the second Test at Adelaide, Rohit Sharma joined the team and led the team, but unfortunately he wasn’t able to contribute with the bat in both innings, and they lost the Test by 10 wickets. The same form continues in the third Test at the Gabba.
Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar, who once backed him during his poor form, has now said that if Rohit fails to score runs in the next two Tests, then he will step down from the captaincy himself. The next two Tests will be held in Melbourne and Sydney.
Gavaskar said,
“I think Rohit obviously will get the opportunity to play in the next couple of matches, that’s for sure. But maybe at the end of it, if he hasn’t scored runs, my feeling is that he himself will take the call.”
Further, Gavaskar said that Rohit is a very conscientious cricketer who will not want to be a burden on the team. If Rohit again fails to contribute in the upcoming two Tests, then he will not be waiting for the selectors to make a call; he himself will step down from the role.
“He’s a very conscientious cricketer; he will not want to be a burden on the team. He’s a cricketer who deeply loves Indian cricket. So if he doesn’t score runs in the next couple of games, I think he himself will step down.”
