Ex-Pakistan Cricketer Questions Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal’s Hunger For Runs
The rising stars of India, Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal, are going through a rough phase in the ongoing third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. Their dismissal in the first innings of the third Test at the Gabba received a lot of criticism.
Jaiswal (4) got out on the second ball of the innings of Mitchell Starc’s power spell, and Gill (1) was caught in the slips.
Former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali raised questions on Gill and Jaiswal’s performance and criticised them for their flop show. He bluntly said that they both don’t have any hunger in them to score runs for the team and should take advice from the legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar.
“Jaiswal aur Gill ko yeh nahi dekhna chahiye ke Kohli bhi out hogya (they shouldn’t take solace from the fact that Kohli too was dismissed without scoring much). He has performed at the highest level; Rohit Sharma has performed.”
“You guys should be hungry about runs, which you are not unfortunate.”
"Gill ko toh bilkul hi nahi hai bhookh" - Basit Ali
Further, Basit said that Gill is not at all hungry for runs, although he loves to smash shots, but Test cricket in name itself states that it is a test. Players need to forget about the past performances and think about the future, which Gill and others are not thinking about.
“Gill ko toh bilkul hi nahi hai bhookh (Gill is not hungry at all for runs). He loves shot-making, but Test cricket is a test of everything. You need to forget the past (good or bad) performances and think about what’s ahead, which unfortunately Gill and others don’t think.”
India avoided the follow-on by scoring 252 for 9 when bad lights and weather forced early stumps on the last second day of the third Test. All the credits go to the powerful knocks played by Ravindra Jadeja (77) and KL Rahul (84). After their dismissal, Jasprit Bumrah (10) and Akash Dep (27) helped the team by pushing the score forward.
The five-match series between India and Australia currently stands at 1-1, India winning the first Test in Perth by 295 runs and Australia winning the second in Adelaide by 10 wickets.
