Not Kohli or Pant: Ravi Shastri Names ‘These’ Key Players for Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has picked Yashasvi Jaiswal and Jasprit Bumrah as the game-changers for India in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. Team India has already reached Australia and begun intense training at WACA ahead of the five-match Test series starting November 22.

In a conversation with Sanjana Ganesan on ICC Review, Shastri highlighted Jaiswal and Bumrah as players who could play a pivotal role for the Rohit Sharma-led team.

Yashasvi Jaiswal: The X-Factor

When asked about India’s X-factor for the series, Shastri singled out the young left-handed opener Yashasvi Jaiswal.

“Jaiswal is my pick because if he gets going, he can be devastating,” said Shastri. He praised Jaiswal’s ability to handle spin effectively and maintain a solid scoring rate. “He plays spin brilliantly, sets his own tempo, and has all the shots in his arsenal,” Shastri added.

Jaiswal’s recent performances have solidified his reputation. He smashed back-to-back double centuries (209 and an unbeaten 214) against England in Vizag and Rajkot, showcasing his hunger for runs and ability to thrive under pressure.

“He’s an entertainer. Scoring consecutive double hundreds is no fluke—it takes quality, hunger, and determination,” Shastri emphasized.

Jasprit Bumrah: Leading the Bowling Attack

Turning to India’s bowling unit, Shastri didn’t hesitate to name Jasprit Bumrah as the most crucial player.

“Jasprit, without a doubt,” Shastri declared. “He’s the best fast bowler in the world right now.”

With an impressive record of 32 Test wickets against Australia at an average of 21.25, Bumrah’s ability to shine on Australian pitches makes him a key weapon for India. Shastri also noted Bumrah’s exceptional form, having won the Player of the Tournament award in the T20 World Cup 2024.

“At this stage of his career, he makes the ball talk. He’s the bowler who can dominate, and I expect him to be the leading wicket-taker in the series,” Shastri said.

A Crucial Series for WTC Final Spot

The upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy holds immense significance for India. To secure a place in the World Test Championship (WTC) Final, India needs to achieve a 4-0 victory in this series. With players like Jaiswal and Bumrah in top form, the team will aim to deliver their best performance on Australian soil.

This series promises to be a thrilling contest, with India looking to make history and cement their spot in the WTC Final in England next year.
