Jasprit Bumrah To Lead India Instead Of Rohit Sharma For BGT 2024-25

Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra thinks that Sunil Gavaskar is not wrong in suggesting that Jasprit Bumrah to lead Team India instead of Rohit Sharma in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. Gavaskar recently stated that Rohit should not lead the team as he might not be available for the first two tests.

Team India will face Australia in a five-Test match series starting from November 22, first game to be held in Perth. According to some reports Rohit Sharma is likely to miss one of the first two tests due to some personal reasons.

In a video shared by Aakash Chopra on his Youtube channel talked about Gavaskar’s point of view on Bumrah to be the skipper for the entire test.

Chopra said,

“Since we don’t know when Rohit Sharma will be traveling as it’s because of personal reasons, Sunny bhai believes that if the captain is not available at the start, he shouldn’t be the captain at all. So the vice captain you have appointed should be made the captain.”

Further, he added that, 

“Once the captain goes, he should play as a player because it’s wrong to start a big series without the captain. What he said is not wrong. This has a lot of merit. It has happened once, Virat Kohli captained the first match and wasn’t available for the next three matches.”

He compared the scenario to the last tour, where Virat Kohli was still appointed as the skipper even though it was confirmed that he would play only the first Test. It was not the first time that captain is not available for the entire series.

“It was known beforehand itself. He played the first match and left, and Ajinkya Rahane captained after that. India lost the first match, they were all out for 36, but after that, they won in Melbourne, drew in Sydney, and broke Gabba’s pride. So it’s not that it’s happening for the first time that the captain isn’t available for the entire series. Virat has done that earlier and Rohit is not reaching there.”

Team India was captained by Ajinkya Rahane in the remaining three Tests and helped the team to register their second consecutive 2-1 series win.
