5 WI Players who might be released ahead of IPL 2025 Auction

West Indies Stars Facing Uncertain Future Ahead of IPL 2025 Auction
Published on:

The IPL 2025 governing council has recently announced new rules for player retention ahead of the 2025 mega auction, which is set to take place later this year. According to new rules, a franchise can retain a maximum of six players by using Retention and Right-To-Match options. The franchise has the option of retaining five capped players and two uncapped players. If a team retains five capped players from their squad, the amount deducted from their overall 120 crore will be 18 crore, 14 crore and 11 crore, respectively. The new set of rules will definitely change the dynamics of the teams heading to mega auction ahead of IPL 2025. So, on that note, let's have a look at five West Indies players who might be released ahead of the next IPL season.

5) Kyle Mayers

The West Indian All-Rounder made his IPL debut in 2022 for Lucknow Super Giants and proved to be an immediate success. In the absence of wicketkeeper batsman Quinton de Kock, Mayers scored great runs and made a name for himself. In the 2023 season, he scored 379 runs in 13 innings with a strike rate of 144.11, which included four half centuries. However, in IPL 2024, Mayers was benched throughout the season and not given any opportunities. So LSG is most likely to release him ahead of the auction.

4) Shai Hope

The West Indies batsman Shai Hopes was part of Delhi Capital's squad in the 2024 season. DC was struggling to find a perfect opening combination, so they used Hope in a few games. However, he could only score 183 runs in nine innings with an average of 22.88. So Delhi Capitals would be unwilling to use a retention spot for him. Hence, Hope might have to register for the auction again.

3) Alzarri Joseph

The 27-year-old right-arm fast bowler has got a reputation for conceding too many runs and he did the same in the last season while playing three games for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Joseph conceded 115 runs with an economy of 11.90 and picked up only one wicket in three games. So RCB will surely not use one of six retention spots for Alzarri Joseph.

2) Romario Shephard

Mumbai Indians, led by Hardik Pandya, had a poor outing in the 2024 season, as the team finished 10th with only four wins in 14 games. But Romario Shephard's batting skills proved to be one of the bright spots for the team. His aggressive batting with a strike rate of 271.43 was definitely praiseworthy. However, MI is unlikely to retain him and he will have to join the auction pool for IPL 2025.

1) Shimron Hetmyer

The 27-year-old batter has been an important part of the Rajasthan Royals franchise for years. He has also scored crucial runs for the team several times. However, despite his amazing T20 batting skills, Hetmyer is likely to miss out on the retention list. So, the West Indian will have to appear in the auctions next year.
