Vande Mataram New Guideline: The Central Government has issued fresh official guidelines concerning the national song, Vande Mataram. The new norms were formalized through a government order dated 28 January 2026, marking a significant step toward standardizing the manner in which the song is performed across the country.

The objective behind these guidelines is to lay down clear and uniform protocols for the singing and playing of Vande Mataram, similar to the established rules that already govern the rendition of the national anthem. Until now, there were no comprehensive and codified instructions specifying when and how the national song should be presented at official functions.

Under the new directive, the full version of Vande Mataram — comprising all six stanzas and running approximately 3 minutes and 10 seconds — has been made mandatory for performance on several designated official occasions. Government departments, public institutions, and educational establishments are expected to comply with these norms to ensure consistency, dignity, and respect in its rendition.

The move is seen as an effort to reinforce the cultural and historical significance of Vande Mataram while ensuring that its presentation maintains uniformity and decorum comparable to that accorded to the national anthem.

  • According to the instructions, the official full version of ‘Vande Mataram’, consisting of six verses and having a running time of about 3 minutes 10 seconds, will be presented at major state functions.
  • This includes events where the national flag is hoisted, the formal arrival and departure ceremonies of the President and Governors, and before and after their addresses.
  • If both ‘Vande Mataram’ and the National Anthem are performed in a programme, the National Anthem will be sung or played first, and the audience will be required to stand as a mark of respect during it.
  • The Home Ministry has asked schools and institutions to promote singing of ‘Vande Mataram’ in daily assemblies and special events to increase respect and awareness towards national symbols among students and the public.
  • The instructions also state that if ‘Vande Mataram’ is performed by a band, it should begin with a drum roll or bugle call to formally signal the start of the anthem.

Additionally, the Ministry has granted special exemptions for cinema halls and film screenings. According to the directive, audiences will not be required to stand when “Vande Mataram” is played in a film’s soundtrack, as forcing them to stand in an entertainment venue could disrupt the audience’s experience and create confusion.
