Sikh heritage Punjab: Very few phases in Punjab’s political history have witnessed a government making decisions with such depth, sensitivity, and respect toward Sikh religious sentiments, traditions, and heritage. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the Aam Aadmi Party–led Punjab government has fulfilled several long-pending demands of the Sikh Panth, receiving widespread appreciation at the grassroots level. Today, the Bhagwant Mann government is increasingly being viewed as a genuine custodian of Sikh heritage in Punjab.
Sikh heritage Punjab: Declaration of ‘Holy Cities’ for Sikh Takhts
One of the most historic decisions of the Bhagwant Mann government has been granting official “Holy City” status to cities associated with three of the most significant Sikh Takhts—
-
the inner city of Sri Akal Takht Sahib (Amritsar),
-
Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib (Sri Anandpur Sahib), and
-
Takht Sri Damdama Sahib (Talwandi Sabo).
With this declaration, a complete ban has been imposed on the sale and consumption of alcohol, tobacco, meat, and intoxicants in these cities. This was not a sudden policy move but the fulfillment of a decades-old demand raised consistently by the Sikh Sangat, which previous governments had ignored.
The decision was announced during a special session convened at Sri Anandpur Sahib on the occasion of the 350th martyrdom anniversary of the Ninth Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji. The Chief Minister categorically stated that no compromise would ever be made with Sikh faith and sanctity.
Sikh heritage Punjab: Honouring Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji
On the occasion of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji’s Shaheedi Diwas, the Mann government took another landmark step. Villages and towns visited by Guru Sahib were granted ₹50 lakh each, amounting to a total allocation of ₹71 crore.
This initiative was not merely financial assistance but a structured effort to keep the legacy of martyrdom alive. The government emphasized that Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji’s supreme sacrifice should not remain confined to history books but must continue to inspire future generations.
Grand Observance of the 350th Martyrdom Anniversary
The Punjab government commemorated the 350th Shaheedi Anniversary of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji on an unprecedented scale. Nagar Kirtans were organized from four cities—Srinagar, Talwandi Sabo, Gurdaspur, and Faridkot—which culminated at Sri Anandpur Sahib.
Across all districts of Punjab, light and sound shows based on Guru Sahib’s life and teachings were organized. From 23 to 29 November, large-scale religious congregations were held at Sri Anandpur Sahib, featuring Kirtan Darbars, interfaith conferences, Nagar Kirtans, drone shows, Gatka performances, and immersive light and sound presentations.
A dedicated tent city was established for devotees. The government also announced the establishment of a university in the name of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji and sanctioned ₹20 crore for the construction of Bhai Jaita Ji’s memorial at Sri Anandpur Sahib.
Preserving Sikh Heritage: Infrastructure and Heritage Development
Beyond religious events, the Bhagwant Mann government has made tangible investments in infrastructure and heritage conservation. Key initiatives include the development of a Heritage Street in Anandpur Sahib, restoration of Jahaz Haveli (associated with Diwan Todar Mal), and special budgetary allocations for preserving other historic Sikh sites.
These efforts have resulted in a consistent rise in religious and heritage tourism across Punjab.
Efficient Management of Major Religious Congregations
The government has also demonstrated strong administrative capacity in managing large religious gatherings. The Shaheedi Sabha at Sri Fatehgarh Sahib was conducted with meticulous planning. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann personally held review meetings with administrative officials to ensure seamless arrangements.
Security, traffic management, and facilities for lakhs of devotees—both domestic and international—were handled efficiently, reinforcing public confidence in governance.
Raising Sikh Issues at the National and International Level
On matters related to Sikh dignity and rights, the Mann government has extended its advocacy beyond state boundaries. Whenever concerns regarding the safety, rights, or respect of the Sikh community arose abroad, the Chief Minister strongly raised these issues with the Government of India, demanding firm action.
This proactive stance has strengthened the Sikh Sangat’s belief that the Punjab government stands firmly with them on every platform.
A Turning Point for Sikh Faith, Heritage, and Governance
Overall, the tenure of the Aam Aadmi Party government under Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann is being widely regarded as a decisive turning point in safeguarding Sikh faith, honoring the tradition of martyrdom, and preserving Sikh heritage.
This phase proves that when leadership is sincere and intentions are clear, politics can become a true instrument of trust and service. Today, one reality is evident in Punjab—the voice of the Sikh Sangat is being heard, and the Bhagwant Mann government is carving out a respectable and enduring chapter in history.
