Physics Wallah, a Edtech startup has raised $100 million in the series A funding, which is becoming a part of the list of unicorns in India. The company’s CEO Alakh Pandey had a unicorn journey. It is Alakh Pandey’s love for teaching that was transformed into a successful enterprise. Pandey started tutoring the young students to support his family in difficult financial conditions, when he was in school himself.
Alakh Pandey, who is raised in Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh, dropped college in his third year to teach physics at an institute in Kanpur. Students there loved the way how he taught, the head of coaching institute advised him to start YouTube channel, so more students can have access to his lessons.

Pandey listened to his advice and launched a channel called Physics Wallah in 2014. In 2017, Alakh Pandey quitted his job of coaching centre and focused on YouTube, in initial years things were going slow, then his channel picked up pace and by, 2019 he had 2 million subscribers. In 2020, the Coronavirus pandemic hit. As the teaching and studies moved to the online, the demand for Pandey’s content also increased.
He also started the Physics wallah app in 2020, and started to sell his courses starting from Rs. 999 to unacademy and Byju’s. Alakh Pandey was also offered a huge salary by Unacademy, in order to end competition, but he refused.

According to the recent data till mid-25, PhysicsWallah is an Edtech giant with a massive subscribers base, of 98.8 million and Alakh Pandey’s YouTube channel has 13.7 million subscribers. And over 10 million paid students on the PW App, 1500 employees and revenue of ₹2,887 crore for FY25.
According to Alakh Pandey, “Physics Wallah is utilizing these funds for their business expansion, branding, opening PW offline centres and also in introducing the courses in other vernacular languages.” As per the Hurun India Rich List 2025 data, the education start-up co-founder Alakh Pandey’s net worth is of ₹14,510 crore. This rise in its net worth has marked Pandey to come in the list of richest individuals of the nation as the demand for Ed-tech is increasing in recent years.
