Punjab has made a major and historic beginning in the field of mental health. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, by launching the country’s first government Leadership in Mental Health Program, made it clear that “War Against Drugs” is not just a slogan, but a ground-level battle, in which the safety and future of every family is at stake. This fellowship will last for two years and is set to become a model not only for Punjab but for the entire country.

Launched in partnership with AIIMS Mohali and TISS Mumbai, this initiative will take mental health and drug prevention to a completely new level in 23 districts. The government is selecting 35 young experts who have studied psychology or social work and have experience working in the field of mental health. These individuals will reach out to villages, cities, schools, colleges, community centres, and rehabilitation facilities across Punjab, implementing a model that has never been seen in India before, integrating prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation.

Bhagwant Mann believes that fighting drug abuse isn’t just the responsibility of the police or administration, but rather requires strengthening the mindset of society. In line with this vision, fellows in this program will receive specialised training, mentorship, and on-the-ground leadership from TISS Mumbai. They will also receive a respectable remuneration of ₹60,000 per month, enabling them to work with Punjab’s youth and families with full energy without any pressure.

This program is truly the heartbeat of Punjab. Drug abuse had spread like an epidemic, but now Punjab has decided to fight this battle in collaboration with experts, using scientific methods, and by reaching out to the people. Bhagwant Mann has shown that when the intention is clear and the goal is the welfare of the people, governments bring about change, not mere rhetoric.

Applications are open until December 7th, and more information can be found at https://tiss.ac.in/lmhp. This isn’t just a fellowship, but an investment in Punjab’s future – a future where every home is safe, every youth is healthy, and every parent can raise their children without the fear of drug abuse.

This is the same Punjab that Bhagwant Mann had envisioned, and now it is slowly becoming a reality.
