Punjab News: Delhi government minister and BJP leader Kapil Mishra has landed in serious controversy over sharing a fake video. A court in Jalandhar, Punjab, has delivered a significant verdict, declaring the viral video featuring Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, Atishi, to be fake. Based on forensic analysis confirming the video was tampered with, the court has directed all social media platforms to remove it immediately.

Punjab News: What is the whole case?

The controversy stems from an event held in the Delhi Assembly in November 2025. The event commemorated the 350th anniversary of the martyrdom of the ninth Sikh Guru, Guru Tegh Bahadur. A short video clip from this event went viral on social media in early January 2026.

The viral clip claimed that Atishi had used derogatory language against Guru Tegh Bahadur. Kapil Mishra shared this video on his X account, alleging that Atishi had insulted the Sikh Guru. The video then spread rapidly.

Kapil Mishra News: Political leaders also shared it

Following Kapil Mishra, several BJP MLAs, some Congress leaders, and Shiromani Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal also shared the video. This hurt religious sentiments, and the matter escalated into a political controversy. A heated debate erupted on social media, and the atmosphere became tense.

Jalandhar Police registered an FIR

As the matter escalated, the police in Jalandhar, Punjab, registered an FIR on January 7, 2026. The complaint was filed by local AAP leader Iqbal Singh. Several leaders, including Kapil Mishra, were named in the FIR. The police downloaded the video from Kapil Mishra’s X account and sent it to the Punjab Forensic Science Laboratory, Mohali. The forensic report, released on January 9, revealed shocking findings.

Forensic report reveals major findings

The forensic investigation, through audio spectrographic and metadata analysis, clearly established that the video had been deliberately edited. According to the report, Atishi did not use the word “guru” in her speech. The caption added to the video was misleading and created with the intention of deceiving people.

Court’s Strict Order

When the report was presented in court on January 15, 2026, the judge described the video as “digitally doctored.” The court stated that such content could pose a threat to public peace and communal harmony. Following this, all social media platforms, including X, Facebook, and YouTube, were ordered to remove the video and delete the related links.

AAP Welcomes the Decision

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has welcomed the court’s decision. AAP leader Saurabh Bhardwaj said that the forensic report has proven that the allegations against Atishi were false. He demanded that Kapil Mishra be removed from his ministerial post and that BJP leaders issue a public apology. Atishi also reacted, stating that the video was actually related to a debate on pollution, which had been distorted and presented misleadingly.
