Bangladesh Election 2026: Big victory after 17 years of exile
Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) President Tarique Rahman secured victory from the Dhaka-17 constituency, marking a significant political milestone after his return to the country. He came back to Bangladesh from London last December, ending more than 17 years of voluntary exile. This election was his first major electoral contest since his return.
After his win, Rahman called on party workers and supporters to refrain from organizing celebratory victory processions. Instead, he urged them to offer special prayers following Friday prayers, emphasizing gratitude and restraint.

According to election results, the BNP is leading in 198 seats. Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami is leading in 62 seats, while the National Citizen Party is leading in 2 seats. Voting took place in 299 out of a total of 300 seats, as the election was postponed in one seat due to the death of a candidate. Counting is still underway.
