MGNREGA New Name: Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government will replace country’s flagship job scheme, of Mahatmna Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act 2005 (MGNREGA) with Viksit Bharat-Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeeevika Mission (Gramin) VB-G RAM G BILL, 2025.

The Proposed law aims to create a rural development framework aligning with the national vision of Viksit Bharat 2047. This Bill guarantees 125 days of paid employment each year to every rural household whosoever, adult members choose to perform unskilled manual work.This scheme is build to promote empowerment, inclusive growth, coordination, and comprehensive development, with the vision to build a prosperous ad resilience rural India.
MGNREGA New Name: What will the new law be?
The new proposed law includes a provision to increase number of days of employment provided to rural families from 100 to 125 days. Additionally, state governments will have greater financial participation. The government says that this new law will strengthen rural development in line with national goal of “Developed India @2047”.
VB-G RAM G: Likely to be introduced in Parliament

A copy of this bill has already been shared with Lok Sabha MPs. It is expected to be introduced in Parliament to formally repeal the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA), 2005. If this bill is passed, it will bring about a major policy change in the existing system of rural employment and livelihood security.
G RAM G YOJANA: Features of the New Framework
The new law proposes the creation of a Central Rural Employment Guarantee Council at the central government level. This council will include a chairperson, representatives from the central and state governments, members of Panchayati Raj institutions, representatives of labour organisations, and non-governmental members from weaker sections of society. There will also be a Member-Secretary, who will be an officer not below the rank of Joint Secretary.
Political Reaction
The proposal has also drawn political reactions. Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi questioned why the government is removing Mahatma Gandhi’s name from the scheme. She said that Mahatma Gandhi was one of the greatest leaders of country and world, and there is no valid reason to remove his name.
Key Features of MGNREGA

This scheme provides a legal guarantee of at least 100 days of wage employment per year to every rural household. If work is not provided within 15 days, there is a provision for unemployment allowance. The scheme ensures that at least one-third of the beneficiaries are women.
Role of MGNREGA in Rural Development
MGNREGA is one of the world’s largest employment guarantee schemes. It has provided employment to millions of rural labourers. Panchayats and Gram Sabhas (village councils) have been given a crucial role in the planning and implementation of the work, thereby promoting development at the local level.
